Successful GT650 brake upgrade (hooray)
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:42:07 PM »

Howdy peeps i have been looking over this forum for a while for easy brake upgrades for the GT650 (pre 2009) i didn't see much beyond pads and lines which helps but in my experience isn't a real fix in my opinion just a band aid measure. (oh and the standard pads are dangerously brittle)

Here goes................
i got a radial master cylinder of a 08 CBR 1000 of ebay (for $92) bolts straight on
a radial adapter as the threads are slightly different (it works great $25 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110479226556&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT)
a mirror mount as the rad cylinder had no hole for it ($19.00 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130358715292&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

there is a slight lack of real estate on the bars for the cylinder and the mirror bracket but with some shuffling they all fit fine
a 30 minute change over bleed out the air and the thing now has better than functional brakes.

The thing used to scare crap out of me as it really didnt pull up well at freeway speeds and i wound up in the mud on the side of the road once but now its pretty good.

i also brought some (BIG) 4 pot calipers but am in 2 minds whether to stuff about with brackets etc when its main function is for commuting and the bolt on solution works great (and i keep the nasty bike in the garage for sunny Sundays)

if you want to try this do so at yr own risk but it worked out well for me

enjoy

Nice work. A little over kill for the commuter tho :)
I took it for a massive road trip packed with gear and mrs on back. Standard brakes worked fine. I also use gearing to slow bike up as well.
