I bought a used GT650R, and found that the pulse control unit is missing entirely.

What does this do?

Thanks!   Grin

I think Pulse Control Unit is another name for CDI?

Sorry, actually, the box labeled IGNITER is what I was thinking of about CDI, actually looking at the wiring diagram, I think Pulse Control is used for the lights, so the lights don't flicker maybe?  Besides power and grounds I see a relay going to the tach (warning light?) and to the headlamp relay, and from there to the rest of the lighting system.

From what I can tell, it supplies the signal to the tacho to tell it what revs you are doing (based on the input from the magneto timing coil).

Also, notice how the headlamp only turns on when the engine is running? I think that's what the headlamp relay connection does.

That makes sense, my US model doesn't turn the headlight off tho, it is always on as long as the key is on (even during startup).

IGNITER or CDI

The CDI gets ALL its power from the magnet pulse from the pick up coil while the IGNITER gets all its power from the Battery, [only the signal/trigger from the pick up].

The Battery provides power all the time [as long as the battery is full] while the CDI is limited to the capacitors ability to hold a charge, this "limits" the advance and duration of the spark in theory. On multiply cylinder spark fired engines the IGNITER is thought to give more even and controllable spark over a wider range that the CDI system.

I have a GT650 with a pulse control and recently brought a wiring harness for a GT650R. That harness does not have a connector for a pulse control. Looking ar the wiring diagrams it does not show one for an "R".
I think what it does is when you start the motor, it turns off the headlights (maybe because of current problems?). Why the "R" does not do this, I don't know?

What year, EFI or "L" and country is your GT650{x} also new or used? Note the GV650 does not have the Pulse Control Unit, where did you get the wiring harness?

Would be nice to know if the factory has made some changes?

As I said in the "wiring question" thread, it looks like the PCU isn't needed according to the 2005 GT650R/S supplement, and its functions are handled by the ignitor. I've got an Australian '06 GT650RL from brand new, and it doesn't seem to have a PCU or the wiring to support one, but the headlights only turn on with the engine running...

And yet a O6 (Aussie) GT650 naked has a PCU.
The headlight comes on as soon as you turn the key.
But a GT650R harness from the States does not even have the wires to connect to one.
Admittedly that harness is different from a naked GT as they don't have any need for the wires and connectors to go into the headlamp shell. So it is shorter in the headstock area.

CCM has a PCU listed.
