Installed a new starter yesterday. Still can't believe the starter only lasted 5k miles. What a pos! Anyway, it's just spinning freely and not turning the motor. Tried several times yesterday reinstalling it and still doing the same thing. Does anyone know what do do? does it need to be shimmed somehow? **** I hate this bike! Should have bout a SV1000 Tongue

Sounds like you did not install the gear correctly, you need to remove the side cover and make sure the gears are installed correctly as they seem to fall out of place when you pull the starter.

If you just removed the original starter from its housing, without taking off the alternator cover, you just push the replacement back in. make sure its pushed fully in, the mounting bracket should be right against the side.
If the stater gears have fallen off, you will have to take the alternator cover off, mind out for oil coming out. Then you will see the gear shaft and gear, just fiddle around until the shaft goes back into its hole and the gear will then be engaged. To do this take off the starter motor first.
