I only use the rear unless its necessary.  Your stopping power is the front brakes.

70/30 I was always taught, I don't know any situation where you would use front only. Only ever use rear for low speed control (10mph or less).

Unless I was taught by a bunch of bafoons? :o

That's all I've ever done.

70 rear / 30 front. To spite 70% of your stopping power being delivered by the front.

I'm of the school of thought that if you're using your front brakes seriously, it's for 'serious' braking. The bulk of the time, I am using taking up the slack in the front brakes, but using mainly compression braking aided by rear brake. Down two gears, level the bike, pelvis forward, shoulders back, palm heel on bar, then when straight(ish) front brake to stationary.

Yea you got it backwards.  Bikes and autos are designs with having the front brakes having the most power to stop.  If it wasnt youd have one tiny caliper in the front and big caliper in the rear.   Just look any any motorcycle (minus small bikes).   Brand new 1000cc bikes still today have a single piston puck sized rear caliper.

Same thing goes with vehicles.  The brakes are proportioned to output greater force on the front brakes than the rears.   When disc brakes came out, they went onto the front of vehicles not the rear because they stop better.

You can use your brakes how ever, just stating the design.

I know what front brakes CAN do. I do emergency brake drills every so often on abandoned roads.

I'm just saying that in the commuting environment, I hardly use them. Get too used to using the front brakes and accidentally panic during a turn and you have a used by date.

Same thing can happen to the rear.  Its a lot easier to lock up the rear than the front.

Thread resurrection.

I just did this to my 2002 GT250 and wow the difference that makes to the rear brake. From next to nothing to now braking. Thank you all.
