Paint Question: Deep scratches on fairing
« on: February 04, 2014, 12:27:56 PM »

Hey All,

Just posting up to get your opinion on options to rectify paint work.
I have some deep scratches on my lower RH fairing after allowing my friend to borrow my bike and him dropping it (this is the only cosmetic damage thankfully).

What are my options?

Half fairing respray - body shop or home job?
Touch up paint/pen
Heavy cutting compound (will this even do anything)?

I know its not big, but thought for resale it might be worth fixing!
Cheers!

I personally would Bondo it myself, sand it back to smooth, then have a partial respray done by a pro shop. $30 or $40 maybe, for a professional finish and correct colour match.

Have you ever taken the bike outdoors at all?

Forget cutting compounds. Because the existing colour is not painted but is in the plastic itself, I'd personally not go with a partial respray because I think it might stand out as different. I think a decent job will require respraying the entire fairing and that means you loose the decals.
Get some quotes first.
See if there are any plastic repairers in your area. We have them in Oz where they weld up and repair plastic fairings for dropped/crashed bikes cause an new set can cost a grand or more for the average bike.

I'd just put up with it or use touch-up pen to any marks that appear white because they penetrated deeper than the outer layer.

you fairing people are funny...naked=no stress...I fix all my paint issues with rattle cans :P just adds to the charm and character...

my advice is: get rid of those giant melamine plates hanging off your handle bars and live free ;)

That is an easy repair, i would simply sand down and respray the section, dont bother full re-spray is a waste of time and money as if you blend it in properly it will look sweet and you then wont have to pay 10 gazzilion $$ for graphics :)

Ever thought of a vinyl wrap like they do on cars and vans for signwriting?

Thanks for all the replies!

Thanks @Hylife, but like you said not keen to lose the decals as they're quite $$.

Decided a partial respray (thanks to @rdugdale), will post some pics up when complete (in the coming days) This way its a bit less noticeable its had a drop and can hopefully retain some resale when it comes time to upgrade ;)
