neutral light won't come on
« on: May 28, 2015, 09:41:33 PM »

Hi. My neutral light won't work anymore (I think I saw this work for a few minutes while examining the bike just before my purchase from PO, but I'm not 100% sure).

What should I look for? Is there something up with the switch that's an easy fix?

Thanks!

When this happened to me , just it was the panel lamp that burned.

While you do not find a lamp , replace by the high beam lamp

Best bet is to replace the neutral switch (gear position sensor on EFI bikes).  It's cheap and is the most likely cause for the problem.

If the bike still starts in neutral with the stand down then it's just the lamp on the dash

I had trouble getting mine in to neutral after an engine swap and found that after adjusting the position of the lever in the splined shifter she started to work. Are you able to actually run in neutral though or will she not go into it at all?

actually, the bike starts okay both in gear and neutral, regardless of side stand position... i'm not sure whether PO shorted the switch (doesn't look like they spent any mechanical time on the bike), or if there's anything else going on.

hi. thanks. shifting to neutral is just fine; never had any problems with that... it's just that the neutral light won't turn on.

To Test, replace the neutral lamp by the high beam lamp

If the sidestand switch is disabled that could account for that.

The neutral light does not need to illuminate, it is just bling.
The gear position sensor is on the left side of the engine near the front sprocket. It is designed to illuminate the neutral bulb and to stop the engine by shorting the coils if you shift out of neutral with the side stand is down.

So it could be the bulb OR the gear position sensor. Without a side stand switch it is impossible to know. Either one is fairly easy to check/clean/replace.

Mine have similar problems. The LED of highbeam and neutral are not showing in the panel but work fine. Tried to replace it but they are integrated LED's and i'm not adventurous enough to try solder new ones
