Starting issues
« on: March 22, 2018, 07:06:37 AM »

Hi guys. Hoping I can get some help with this problem.... jumping off a full battery, starter solenoid ok, as far as I can see all earth points are good but starter still wont crank bike over properly. Acts the same as a flat battery as in when I hit starter, bike will crank slowly then solenoid ticks and dash lights go off, tacho needle tends to jump around too. So bike is a 2007 GT650R, has been sitting for a fair while but was running ok when I stopped riding it (had to go on a government enforced fitness program 😝).

Not unusual if the existing battery is complete toast.
You need a new battery buddy.

Yeah new battery is not the problem. Ive tried running off 2 different brand new batteries and I get the same thing.

Might be worth taking the motor apart and checking brushes etc, sounds like it's short circuiting to me.

Ok so quick update.... got the bike started. All of a sudden it seems to be firing up fine! Problem now is it will only run with choke on. Idles good with choke, turn choke off it dies. Could this be blocked or stuck jets?

Definitely worth checking.

Also, what's the quality of your spark like? Pull a plug and place it against something that isn't painted, then then the bike over. Works best with the help of a friend.

Sharp, thin, almost invisible blue = good
Fat, yellow and thick = bad

Yeah spark was good. I replaced plugs anyway. Pulled carbs off and had 2 blocked jets. Cleaned them up a bit and bike seems like it wants to run off choke now.... need to adjust idle etc... now the bike is backfiring while idling on choke. Going to grab a can of carb cleaner tomorrow and see if that will clean it out some more.

Hope it goes well.
Just glad I'm not running cars considering all the problems you guys get with them.

Every mechanical/electrical system has issues in some form or other . It's just the lesser of 2 evils as far as I am concerned .
Upside doidoidi......If is said Australia was normally hot , would you disagree and tell me I was wrong ?
