Stator side is like new. Clutch basket is tight, everything looks perfect. Chain tensioners possibly.

is the clunk from front or rear cylinder ??

easy thing to test, swap the coil packs around and see if the opposite cylinder starts knocking.

In all honesty, sounds like its coming from the lower case near the front chain sprocket. But thats all nice and tight.

Noises can be half impossible to trace sometimes and very misleading.
If it was the cam chain rattling, then surely it would sound like a rattle? This sounds like an irregular dull knock.

Anyway, back to the point (kind of). I thought I had a suspension component failure on my car. I was convinced the noise was coming from underneath the car under the passenger seat area. Turned out it was the tailgate knocking where the catches had come loose!! - so nowhere near where I thought.
Sounds travel in mysterious ways!

Yeah, doesn't sound like a rattling chain.  I'll keep digging.

Not as yet. I'll put some time into it today.

Checked TPS values, error codes, and went through some electrical connections. No joy. Only got one hiccup on start up, but still a hiccup. Does it with sidestand up or down. Clutch lever in or out. I'll try again next weekend. Might swap coils over as suggested to see if anything changes.

To eliminate the sssssss, try shorting it out.
Just because your sssssss is up, doesn't mean it's working
I don't think it's that though.
Coils seem like a possibility.
