Sad Day But a New Beginning
« on: May 25, 2018, 09:07:00 AM »

I'll just cut to the chase, Its a sad day to see my GT650R go.
I miss the power and feel of the sport bike but as my knee hated me every time i rode it i couldn't put it off any longer.
There is a new addition to the flock however so not all is lost.
A 2003 Yamaha Dragstar XVS 400.
Its a very clean bike and i think i got the better end of the deal with only 14000 k's on the clock compared to my 28000's on the GT650R.
Its such a comfy bike in comparison to the GT650R, however the 400cc is most certainly lacking a lot. However that will be fixed soon with the swap of a XVS650 Motor.
Here it is in all its glory :

How different is that from the V-star Warrior? IIC the warrior has R1 forks and front brakes..

It's a Yamaha, so it'll be electrically sound. It'll have twin Mikunis, which are a damn sight better than most carbs. I wonder what bikes might also have those?  :-\ ..they sound familiar.

Is it shaft drive, or belt?

Very different from the warrior.
Its shaft drive also.

Basically the XVS400 is a Dragstar/V-Star 650 just with a smaller bore/stroke engine. That said 650 crank/rods/pistons/cylinders etc... bolt straight on.
Even the 650 Exhaust is a direct fit on the 400.

Its because they all share the same parts, front brake is a xvs650 unit.

So i got a few bits and pieces for it over the past little bit.
XVS650 motor which i'm testing out. So much nicer than the 400.
I got a Hypercharger for it, and man that is one sweet piece of gear.
Also got a pair of 2 & 1/4" drag pipes for it for free, they are sooooo loud tho, like worst of the harley's type loud. So i gotta make some baffles and get them to where im happy before i send them off for ceramic coating.

Apart from that i'm happy as with the bike, so nice and easy to ride as well as comfy to boot. I miss the power of the Hyo tho but this is such a sweet bike i can live with it.

Yeah,
So stock jets are 20 pilot / 90 main + 3rd notch needle. From what i've read the one of the best combos seem to be going pilot 22.5 / main 100 + 4th notch needle and minor adjustment of idle mixture screw.

Just to give you an idea my 1100 has an exhaust on it which is nice, still apparently illegal loud, but its not harley deafening.
The dragpipes on the dragstar are more than double loud the 1100.

Something even more wierd, the XV1100 feels light a lot lighter bike than the XVS650.
Forks/Front end of the XV1100 is higher, has dragbars and foot pegs and is so comfy except for the damn bobber seat. They are surprisingly two very different bikes.
