Into the CDI:

Crank position sensor. - Has this been fiddled with? It co-exists with the stator. It doesn't sound like your issue, because if it was unplugged, there would be NO spark. Regardless, I would trace the wires and give them a good jiggle.

Out of the CDI:

4 wires, no? Two ground wires that get switched and two constant power wires, I think. I don't have a carb bike, so I am not familiar. What does the worship manual say?
I used to be a sensitive, new age guy, but times have changed and now I am more of a caring, understanding, ninties type.

Technically the bike will run without the gauge cluster. You have other issues besides that. Unplug the cluster. Does the bike start?  If all you changed was the cluster it could be tach signal getting grounded ...
