Mystery fuel leak.
« on: July 22, 2018, 12:37:44 PM »

So,

I've not used the bike for around 3 months due to work and other issues.
Started it yesterday and noticed the fuel gauge on one bar and flashing.
I then smelt fuel and noticed it dripping down the left side of the engine and pooling on the floor!

Stopped the bike and had a look around with a torch and saw nothing leaking / dripping.
Anyways, having other things to do I left it.

Went out this morning, could see nothing - everything dry.
Started the bike, gauge is now on two bars and not flashing??

However, it's now not leaking / dripping?
Had a look all over the place (with the tank still down) with a bright inspection light and a torch. Nothing! - Everything dry, no drips, no more leaking on the floor.

Any ideas guys? - very odd indeed the leak has now disappeared??

So what has fuel in it?:

The tank - Pinhole leak around the seam?

The pump/gasket - re-torque screws?

Hoses and connectors - A split in one of the lines or a loose connector?

I have an idea. Sprinkle some talcum powder around the bottom of the tank, the lines, etc and also on the engine. Prime the pump and then go watch the latest battlebots episode. Go back and see if there's any signs of a leak.

Could not find anything loose, split or damaged.
I may, as you suggest check the screw tightness of the fuel pump though.

It's all still odd though.

Well, I put it to you that you did in fact find evidence of a leak  ;)  ..unless your partner is cleverly messing with you.  ;D

Still a mystery.
Started her up today and nothing.

Anyhow, I propped up the tank and checked the fuel pump gasket. All screws were tight, but I did get a slight turn on three of them - only slight though. All else looked good, nothing loose or looking perished etc.
Started it again and idled / revved it for circa 15 mins and nothing?
Very odd, but as it no longer appears to be leaking, I'll stop worrying about it.
