Clipons to handlebars conversion. Help
« on: July 26, 2018, 05:57:17 AM »

I decided since I made my gtr naked, that I would swap out the clipons for handlebars.
I've drilled my top clamp, installed the bar clamps. I ordered a new throttle cable, clutch cable and choke cable for the gt250. And new stainless steel brake hoses to fit.
But the wires for the right side controls don't seem to be long enough to mount the controls on the bars. Do I need to splice in more wire? Or is it a routing issue?
Who has done this conversion? And how and where did you route all the wires and cables. I've been trying to search on this forum and have come up empty. If anyone has some pics or help, that would be great.
Thanks.

The easiest way is to get cables and wires from the GT or GTS

If you drink that much light beer, isn't that defeating the purpose?  ;D

Obviously the main reason for the conversion is to appear less awesome and hardcore. Light beer completes the look.

You're welcome MotoFairfield!

By the way, I agree with Cloud.

The wiring loom is exactly the same on the GT and GTR. The only difference is that there is an adaptor cable that plugs in behind where the stock headlight used to be and suits either a bike with clip-ons, or a bike with handlebars. Simply find one of those wiring adaptors from a GT or GTS.

Thanks, I ended up just soldering in a 3 inch section of wires to both harnesses. I've got it 90% done, just waiting for the brake lines to get here.

Finally got all the brake hoses and cables in, so last night I finished off my conversion from clip on to handle bars.
I'm trying to build the Hyo into a tracker/scrambler.
Here's how it looks so far, what do you guys think.

That's a unique and interesting bike.

Lots of little, subtle details everywhere. You can't pick a spot and not see something clever.

I love the over and under dual tone horns. I much prefer it that way to side by side. You nailed it.

I like the brake lines and how they are routed with the P clips. Looks more OEM than the originals. Like they should always have been done like that. To speak plainly though, I would have forgone the spiral protectors. I know why you did it, I just think it's going to prove difficult to keep clean and will end up looking worn.

I love the cowl around the dash cluster. I would like to see it and the dash cluster brought forward and further down. I feel that would improve the lines around the headlights and reduce the visibility of clutter, wiring, etc.

A thought:

Uniformity of colour. i.e. consider standardising the colour of accessories to match the colour of your fork tubes. Brake calipers, rear sets, remote reservior cap, levers, etc. ...triple clamp? No. Maybe not. Possibly black for that? Tan grips to match the luggage?
