Maybe it's also something simple like the side stand switch or clutch interlock?
Like I said , there are other circuits involved and if it's not the start switch or relay/solenoid , he will need a drawing .
Start off with the basics and go from there .
Sid , it could be ANYTHING so thanks for coming up with other things IT COULD BE  ::)  but with fault finding , you have to work you way though the circuits .
I tell you what , lets all be smart arses and see who can make the biggest list of THINGS IT COULD BE  and just forget about methodical fault finding  ::)

They are basics Spit - takes seconds to link them out and eliminate them as a possible cause.
Sorry buddy but I was taught to take a methodical approach to fault finding ( I do it for a living on Komatsu 930E , LeTourneau loaders , CAT everything and Hitatchi 3600) and I can't just jump around a system and test everything "it could be" .
It is an interesting approach to fault finding mind  ::)

Argue all you like my friend.
I'm an M&E engineer of 40 years experience, who regularly fault finds panels & systems 50x the size of a 650 bike. Go for the simplest and possibly most obvious things first - then go methodical.
How long does it take for example to test and eliminate a side stand switch for example? - seconds!
You then go onto the more involved options.

If it's in neutral, I don't know if it could it still be the side stand switch. One way or another, the side stand switch is known to suck. It's generally the second suspect (behind a dead battery) in any starting issue.

Could still be the clutch switch. Extremely simple to bypass. If you look at the connector, you will know what to do. Just unplug the bullet connectors and plug the loom side ones into eachother.

If it's not the clutch switch, then it's most likely the relay. As spit said, test for voltage across the two little wires.

Hey Sid , don't take things to heart buddy .

I try not to mate.
I do like you and think you're a good bloke - maybe we're both a bit too hot headed?

Anyways,
Have a look at this (below) and see what you think. You're more used to 12v neg earth than me. Most of my stuff is high voltage switching...

Ok,

Hopefully I've been looking at the correct wiring diagram.
The starter button is fed from the engine emergency stop switch. It then goes through the clutch lever switch and straight to the starter relay.
However, the engine emergency stop switch is fed from the side stand relay. Therefore, even if the side stand switch itself is ok, it could still be a faulty side stand relay.

So,
Ignoring a bad connection or loose wire, the culprits could be:
Emergency stop switch.
Starter switch.
Clutch switch.
Side stand relay.
Starter relay.

What says you Spit..?

you are spot on
That is why I would start from the end because it's easier to get to and work my way back  ;)
We know his bike works because he ran it my shorting out the main solenoid so his ignition is OK .
I would also say most of the other circuits are fine too .
My guess would be , in order ....start switch , clutch switch , solenoid .
If the stop switch was bad , it would cut out .
Not sure if the side stand relay would stop it from starting , just selecting gear and then it would stop if it thought it
was still down .
I did say start relay too (main relay) but if this was out , not sure he would be able to start his bike so we will forget that one .

If I had to guess , I would say he has fixed it and it's something so stupid he doesn't want to come back and tell us  ;D

Yep,

Could be yet another thread that dies and we never know what the problem was - very common on the interweb.......
