Help with an 05 SF50 Rally
« on: September 12, 2018, 03:11:50 PM »

Morning folks. Just picked up a 2005 SF50 Rally scooter for my son. It was non-running but complete. after a tear down, clean up, wire fix, carb clean etc it runs but not right. I have rebuilt 5-6 Motorbikes but this is the first 2 stroke, I can't for the life of me find the suggested pilot setting for the carb after a cleaning. I started at 1.5 turns out and the bike starts, idles, revs for a bit then dies. it fires back up but not always easily and I managed to ride it around the house a bit.  The fan and shroud were destroyed on it so I've not let it run too long sitting, I ordered a replacement along with brake pads that were shot. It was really muddy all under the body panels, cleaned that all up and it has new tires, gearbox oil was clean, has 5500 Km's on it and all the lights, horn etc work. So once I get the fan installed and I don't have to worry about the engine overheating and seizing I want to fully warm it up and get the idle screw and pilot set correctly for it to run right.  Any help on how many turns out from closed to start at for each would be really appreciated. It has the black wire from the CDI cut and the washer from the variator removed, factory pipe and airbox and I didn't look at the jet Number when I cleaned the carb but I am guessing it's stock.

You sound like you know what you're doing so I reckon it's time for a bit of trial and error on twiddling that screw.

Thanks guys, just an update: received the new fan and shroud so was able to let it warm up to proper temp. it's hard to get going from cold but once warm it starts with one push of the starter or one kick. I have it idling at 1200 RPM and will rev to 8K sitting on the stand. I have ridden it around the yard so far but had to replace the headlight and the RR on it, the speedo doesn't work, sorted it down to the hub drive so I need to look at that, the old drill on the cable made the needle climb.  all in all it's almost ready to be road legal again. Thanks for the links, I find the manual barely any good but does have some info I needed.  So what I did so far:
New front pads
New headlight
New RR
Cleaned carb and whole bunch of other bits and pieces
new battery
New main fuse to blade style (this was bad, fuse was ok but wires were shorted)
new fan and shroud
